Brass Cow and Calf Idols (Kamdhenu)
Kamdhenu · gai bachda · cow with calf · pital ki gai · gau mata · Kamdhenu cow
About these pieces
The cow with her calf is one of the most gifted brass figures in India. Fifty-two are brass and seventeen are aluminium. Most stand between 3 and 13 inch and weigh from 280 g to about 12 kg.
For a mandir shelf or an office desk, a 3 to 5 inch piece is enough. One 5 inch brass cow here weighs 1.65 kg, which shows how much solid metal is in a small figure. For a living room or an entrance, look at 8 inch and above, and check the length of the base as well as the height, because a cow figure is longer than it is tall. Aluminium pieces give you a large figure at a lower weight and price.
Kamdhenu is the wish-fulfilling cow of the Puranas, usually shown with a calf at her side. Many families keep one in the mandir or gift it at a griha pravesh. Treat the vastu beliefs around it as tradition; we do not promise results.
