About these pieces

The kalash is set up at the start of a griha pravesh, a wedding, Navratri and most havans. Eighteen are brass, three are stainless steel and one is silver plated. Sizes start at about 5 inch, with capacities from 650 ml up to 9.8 litre, and weights from 340 g to about 12.35 kg.

Pick by the puja. For a home puja on a chowki, a kalash of 650 ml to about a litre is enough: it has to hold water, mango leaves and a coconut on the mouth. So check the mouth width against a normal coconut. A kalash of 10 to 12.5 inch suits a wedding mandap, a temple or an entrance. A very large kalash is a decor or temple piece, and filled with water it is too heavy to move, so place it first and fill it after.

After the puja, empty the water the same day, rinse and dry the kalash inside and out. Standing water leaves a green line on brass that takes effort to remove.
