About this collection

This page holds 41 big diyas from ₹1,530, in heights from 15 to 48 inch. All 41 are pure brass, made in Moradabad, and weigh from 410 g to 27 kg.

Big diyas come in three builds. Stand diyas are a tall stem with a wick plate on top, listed at 19, 24.5, 25 and 28 inch, with a Mahabharat design at 21 inch. They stand on the floor on either side of a mandir, a stage or a doorway. The Kerala lamp, or nilavilakku, at 16.4 inch, has a round oil dish with several wick points and is the lamp lit at inaugurations. Hanging oil lamps, such as an 18.5 inch piece at 420 g, are light because they hang from a chain or hook. Figure lamps with a cock or peacock on top are also here. Half the lamps cost ₹8,760 or more. For a temple, hall or event, check weight against height. A floor lamp should be heavy at the foot so a brush of a sari or a child cannot tip it. The heaviest pieces need a firm, level floor and two people to lift.

A big lamp holds a lot of oil, so place it before you fill it and never carry it lit. Use sesame oil or ghee. After the event, drain the dish, wipe out the oil and store the lamp dry.
