Copper is the metal traditionally used for offering water: Surya arghya in the morning, jal on a Shivling, and the water kept beside the kalash. Pick the size by the job. Height does not tell you capacity: a 4 inch lota here holds 900 ml and a 5 inch one holds 700 ml, so read the millilitres in the name. Finish is the other choice. Plain lota are smooth and quickest to clean. Chatai lota have a woven mat pattern beaten into the surface, which hides small dents and fingerprints.

Copper darkens. That is the metal reacting with air and water, not a defect. Rub it with lemon and salt or tamarind, rinse and dry straight away, and the pink colour comes back. Do not leave milk or panchamrit standing in a copper lota; pour it out and wash the lota after the pooja.
