About these pieces

An urli is a wide, shallow bowl. It began as a cooking vessel in Kerala and is now filled with water, flower petals and floating diyas at the entrance of a home. Listed sizes run from 6.3 inch table bowls to pieces of 16 and 17 inch across, some on a stand and some carved with Ganesh or Lakshmi.

Diameter is the number to choose by. An 8 inch urli is a table piece for a centre table or a mandir. Around 12 to 13 inch is the usual size for an entrance or a living room corner. 16 inch and above makes a statement in a large hall or a hotel lobby. Urlis are cast thick, so they are heavy: a 12 inch one here weighs 2.26 kg, and the range goes up to about 17.5 kg. That is before you add water.

Change the water daily. Standing water with petals leaves a ring on the brass, and it also attracts mosquitoes.
