About this collection

This page holds 35 copper lota and achmani for puja from ₹80, up to 5 inch tall. All 35 are copper. Most lota hold between 300 ml and 900 ml, weights go up to 720 g and the costliest piece is ₹2,580.

Copper is the metal traditionally used for offering water: Surya arghya in the morning, jal on a Shivling, and the water kept beside the kalash. Pick the size by the job. A 300 to 450 ml lota of 3.2 to 4 inch is easy to hold in one hand for daily arghya. A 580 to 900 ml lota suits abhishek, or a family that fills it once for the whole pooja. Height does not tell you capacity: a 4 inch lota here holds 900 ml and a 5 inch one holds 700 ml, so read the millilitres in the name. Finish is the other choice. Plain lota are smooth and quickest to clean. Chatai lota have a woven mat pattern beaten into the surface, which hides small dents and fingerprints.

Copper darkens. That is the metal reacting with air and water, not a defect. Rub it with lemon and salt or tamarind, rinse and dry straight away, and the pink colour comes back. Do not leave milk or panchamrit standing in a copper lota; pour it out and wash the lota after the pooja.

Good to know

Is this pure copper or copper plated?
All 35 pieces on this page are listed as copper, not plated brass or steel. The weight is on each listing so you can compare.
Which copper lota size is right for Surya arghya?
300 to 450 ml, about 3.2 to 4 inch tall, is the easiest to lift and pour with both hands. Go to 580 ml or more only if you want one fill to last the pooja.
Why has my copper lota turned dark or green?
Copper tarnishes when it meets air, water and acids. Clean it with lemon and salt, rinse and dry at once, and it will brighten again.
Can I keep drinking water in a puja lota?
Copper vessels are traditionally used for storing water, but these are open pooja lota without lids. For drinking water, a covered copper jug or bottle is the more practical choice.
What is a chatai lota?
It is a lota with a woven mat texture hammered into the copper. It is here in 450 ml (4 inch) and 600 ml (4.8 inch).
