About this collection
An akhand diya is a lamp meant to stay lit, through Diwali night, through the nine nights of Navratri, or beside a daily puja. What makes it different from an ordinary diya is the cup. It is deep enough to hold ghee for hours, and the rim is shaped to hold a thick cotton wick upright. As a working rule, 100 ml of ghee with a thick wick burns for about 6 to 8 hours.
Pick by how long the lamp must burn. For Diwali night or an evening puja, the 3 to 4 inch sizes are enough. For Navratri, where the jyot should not go out for nine days, take one of the larger sizes, 5 inch and up, and top it up before the level drops below the base of the wick. For a daily lamp, the smallest sizes use the least ghee.
Use ghee in the mandir, and sesame or sunflower oil elsewhere. Avoid mustard oil in brass, it leaves a black film. Keep the lamp away from a fan or an open window, or stand it inside a glass chimney if you have one. Every size on this page lists its height and weight.
