Brass Peacock, Hanging and Figure Oil Lamps (Mor Deepak)

These are lamps with a figure built in. A peacock crowns the stem, a cock stands over the oil cup, a lady holds the lamp in her hands, or Ganesh sits behind the wicks. Hanging lamps on chains are here too. 62 are pure brass and 2 are aluminium.
A figure lamp is seen all day and lit for a short time, so judge it as a showpiece first. Look at the casting of the bird or the figure in the photos, then at the lamp itself: how many wick spouts it has and how deep the cup is. For a hanging lamp, measure the drop of the chain and make sure the hook can take the weight. Weights run from about 170 g to 5 kg, and a peacock lamp of only 5 inch can weigh a full kilo.
Soot collects on the underside of any figure above the flame. Wipe it while it is still fresh; old soot needs lemon and salt to shift.
