How to Identify Pure Brass: 6 Checks You Can Do at Home
Six home checks for real brass: magnet, weight, colour under a scratch, sound, tarnish and price per kg. Tell solid brass from plated iron or aluminium.
Start with a magnet and your hand. Brass is not magnetic, and it is heavy for its size, so a piece that grabs a magnet or feels light is not solid brass. Those two checks settle most cases. Four more follow, with what each one can and cannot prove.
Why it matters: plated iron and aluminium sold as brass
Two things are commonly passed off as brass. One is iron or steel with a brass coloured plating. The other is aluminium with a golden finish. Both look right in a photo. Plated iron rusts once the coating chips. Aluminium is fine for a light, low priced idol, but it should be sold as aluminium.
Honest listings say what the metal is. In our catalogue, 3,302 products are pure brass, 581 are aluminium, 106 are silver plated and 30 are iron, and each listing states the material and the weight. We do not claim a purity percentage for any product, and no home test can give you one.
| Check | What it can show | What it cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Magnet | Iron or steel under plating | Brass from aluminium, copper or bronze |
| Weight | Aluminium, or a thin hollow shell | Brass from bronze or copper |
| Scratch colour | Plating over another metal | The alloy’s composition |
| Ring | A dull, filled or cracked piece | The metal for certain |
| Tarnish | Iron (red rust) versus copper alloy | Anything on a new or lacquered piece |
| Price against weight | An offer too cheap to be brass | That a costly piece is real |
Check 1: the magnet
Hold a fridge magnet to several spots, including the base. Brass is not magnetic. If the magnet sticks, the piece is iron or steel under a brass coloured coating.
Limits: a magnet that does not stick proves only that the piece is not iron. Aluminium, copper and bronze are not magnetic either.
Check 2: weight in the hand and on the listing
Brass has a density of about 8.5 g per cubic cm. Aluminium is about 2.7. At the same size, brass is roughly three times heavier.
Online, read the weight in grams against the height. A large “brass” idol that weighs very little is not solid brass.
Limits: a hollow brass casting weighs less than a solid one and is still brass. Weight cannot tell brass from bronze or copper, which are all heavy.
Check 3: colour inside a scratch or under the base
Pick a hidden spot, such as under the base. Make a small scratch with a pin or the edge of a file. Real brass is yellow all the way through. A plated piece shows grey or silver metal beneath the yellow skin.
Limits: this confirms the piece is yellow metal through and through. It does not tell you the proportions of the alloy. Never scratch a visible surface.
Check 4: the ring when tapped
Hold a thali, lota or bell lightly by the rim, or balance it on your fingertips, and tap it with a wooden spoon. Brass gives a clear ring. Iron sheet gives a flatter clank, and aluminium a short, dull note.
Limits: sound depends on shape and thickness. A solid idol hardly rings at all, whatever it is made of. Use this as a supporting check on vessels and bells only.
Check 5: how it tarnishes
Real brass tarnishes brown to black, and can go green where moisture sits. Plated iron rusts red, often first at edges, seams and the base. Aluminium turns a dull, chalky grey. See why brass turns black or green.
Limits: this takes time, and a lacquered piece will not tarnish while its coat is intact.
Check 6: price against weight
Divide the price by the weight to get a rough price per kg, and compare a few listings of similar work. If one offer is far below the others for the same stated weight, either the weight or the metal is not what is claimed.
Limits: a high price proves nothing. Fine engraving, colour work and large size all raise the price per kg honestly.
