Brass Nandi Idols (Nandi Bull Murti)
Nandi · Nandi bail · Nandi maharaj · Shiv vahan · pital ka Nandi
About these pieces
Nandi is the seated bull who faces Shiva in every Shiva temple. He is Shiva's vahan and gatekeeper, and at home he is placed in front of the Shivling, looking at it. Heights run from about 2 inch to 22 inch.
Match Nandi to your Shivling. He should be smaller than the ling and sit low enough that his gaze meets it. The 2 to 2.5 inch pieces are listed for a desk or a car. The 5 inch size suits a home mandir, and 8 to 9 inch belongs in a pooja room. Nandi is cast solid and sits close to the ground, so he is heavy for his height: the 5 inch pieces here weigh well over a kilo, and the largest reaches 31.96 kg. Check the weight before placing one on a glass or wooden shelf.
Because Nandi sits next to the abhishek, he gets splashed with water and milk. Rinse and dry him along with the Shivling so no residue is left in the carving.
