About these pieces

These are the modest, everyday lamps: plain samai on a stem and small table lamps with a glass chimney over the flame. 22 are pure brass and 8 are iron, and the iron ones are mostly chimney lamps.

The first choice is open flame or chimney. A chimney lamp protects the flame from a fan or a draught, which makes it practical on a dining table, a balcony or near a window. An open samai gives the traditional look beside a mandir and is easier to clean. Then pick the height: about 4.5 to 6.5 inch for a table, 9 inch and above to stand on the floor next to a low shrine. These lamps are light, from about 100 g to 760 g, so place them where they will not be bumped.

Let a glass chimney cool before you lift it off, and wipe the soot from the inside while it is dry.

Good to know

Do you have a big brass samai?
This category goes up to about 14 inch. Taller floor lamps are in the Kerala lamps and stand diya sections.
What is the use of the chimney?
The glass chimney shields the flame from wind so it burns steadily. It also keeps the flame away from sleeves and curtains.
Are the iron lamps as good as the brass ones?
They work the same way and cost less. Iron can rust if left wet, so dry it after cleaning; brass does not rust.
How do I decorate with a table oil lamp?
Use one as a centrepiece with flowers at its base, or place a pair at the two ends of a console. Keep the area above the flame clear.
