About this piece

This brass tope, or bhagona, is 4 inches high and weighs 540 grams. Made in Moradabad from pure brass and polished, it is a small cooking vessel for daily use. The rounded base sits steady on the stove.

Wash with mild soap and dry fully after each use. The kalai or tin lining wears over time; get it re-coated by a kalai-wala when it thins. It is a traditional gift for a new kitchen.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
