About this piece

This brass Kerala lamp, or round nilavilakku, is 15.2 inches high and weighs 1,300 grams. Made from pure brass in Moradabad and polished, the round lamp holds several wicks. It suits a festive entrance or a temple.

Wipe the lamp with a dry cloth after use and clear soot from the wicks. Lemon and salt take off tarnish. It is a graceful gift for Onam, Diwali, or a wedding.

The craft

Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
