About this piece

This large brass dosa tawa is made from pure brass in Moradabad. It is polished on the cooking face and has a broad, flat base for even contact with the burner. It is sized for dosa and chilla on a family stove.

Wash with mild soap and dry the cooking face at once. Kalai on the surface wears over time; get it re-coated when it thins. It makes a useful gift for a South Indian kitchen.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
