Bhai Dooj Tilak Thali Items: The Complete List and the Ritual in Order
Everything on a Bhai Dooj tilak thali: roli, chawal, diya, kalava, sweets, lota, and the ritual in order. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November 2026.
Bhai Dooj falls two days after Diwali, on Wednesday 11 November 2026. The sister lays out a thali, applies tilak to her brother’s forehead, feeds him a sweet, and he gives her a gift. If you are preparing the thali the night before, possibly for the first time in your own home, this is the full list, then the ritual in five steps, then the gift.
The thali: 11 items
- A brass thali, 8 to 10 inch. Big enough for three or four katoris, a diya and the sweets without anything touching the flame.
- Roli (kumkum) in a small katori, for the tilak.
- Chawal (akshat), unbroken rice grains, pressed on the wet tilak.
- Haldi and chandan. Some families use a haldi tilak under the roli; chandan is for the brother’s forehead in Bihar and eastern UP.
- A diya with ghee and a cotton wick. A small brass diya with a handle is easiest to lift for the aarti.
- Kalava or mauli thread, tied on the brother’s right wrist after the tilak.
- Flowers. A few marigold petals or a small garland.
- Sweets. Laddoo or barfi; in UP and Bihar also dry coconut (gola) and batashe.
- Supari and a paan leaf. Offered after the sweet.
- A small lota of water and an achmani. For the sip of water before the tilak and the drops around the diya.
- A coin or note from the brother. Placed on the thali after the aarti, before the gift.
The ritual, in order
- Seat the brother facing east or north on a chowki or a mat, with the thali on a small table or stool beside the sister. Light the diya.
- Apply the tilak. With the ring finger of the right hand, roli on the forehead, then a few grains of chawal pressed on it. Where the family does it, the haldi or chandan mark goes first.
- Aarti. Lift the diya and circle it in front of the brother three times, clockwise. Sprinkle a few drops of water from the lota around him with the achmani.
- Kalava and sweet. Tie the thread on his right wrist, then feed him the sweet, a piece of dry coconut and the paan with supari. In Bihar the sister traditionally prays for his long life while doing this.
- The gift and the blessing. The brother places the coin or note on the thali, hands over the gift, and touches the feet of an elder sister or blesses a younger one. The meal follows; the sister cooks or the family eats together.
The gift
Sweets are eaten by the weekend. A brass gift is used for years and is what most North Indian families give on this day. The common picks:
| For a sister | For a brother |
|---|---|
| Thali set with katoris and diya | Desk Ganesh, 3 to 4 inch |
| Pair of brass glasses | Kuber deepak for the shop counter |
| Small urli for the entrance | Brass glass set for the kitchen |
The Bhai Dooj gifts collection holds 267 pieces from ₹75 to ₹2,500, every one boxed. The thali category has 89 thalis and thali sets from ₹75 if you want the thali alone.
Timing and ordering
The tilak muhurat on Bhai Dooj is in the afternoon, roughly 1:00 to 3:15 pm across North India in 2026; check your city’s panchang for the exact window, since it shifts by a few minutes between Delhi, Lucknow and Patna. The puja shop run can happen the same morning. The brass cannot: Diwali week couriers are slow, so order by 6 November for delivery to most pin codes before the day. If the gift is going straight to a brother or sister in another city, put their address at checkout and the message in the order notes.
