Which Shivling Is Best for Home: Size, Metal and Placement
Which Shivling to keep at home: a small one, by custom no taller than a few inches, in brass, stone or parad. Which way the spout points and how to care for it.
For a home, custom favours a small Shivling: many families follow the rule that it should be about the size of a thumb, and most keep one under 4 to 6 inches. A larger Shivling calls for the fuller daily worship of a temple. Brass is a practical choice for daily abhishek because it does not chip and is easy to dry.
These are customs. They differ between traditions, and your family’s practice or priest’s advice comes first.
Size
| Where | Usual height of the Shivling |
|---|---|
| Shelf mandir in a flat | 1 to 3 inches |
| Separate pooja room | 3 to 6 inches |
| Home temple building or courtyard shrine | Larger, with a priest’s guidance |
A Shivling is measured by its height above the base. The base (yoni or jaladhari) with its spout adds width, so check the full length on the listing against your shelf.
Metal or stone
- Brass: durable, takes water and milk daily, easy to clean. Often comes with a brass snake (naag) and a kalash stand for dripping water.
- Stone (Narmada, black stone, marble): traditional; can chip and stain.
- Parad (mercury alloy) and sphatik (crystal): prized in some traditions, costly and often imitated. Buy only from a seller who states exactly what the piece is made of.
We sell brass and other metal Shivlings and state the metal and weight on each listing.
Placement
- By the most common custom the spout of the base points north, and the worshipper sits facing east or north. Some traditions keep the spout to the east.
- Place it on a plate or tray so that offered water drains and does not pool on the shelf.
- One Shivling in a home mandir is the usual practice.
- Nandi, if kept, sits in front facing the Shivling. See Nandi idol at home.
- Do not keep it in a bedroom or on the floor.
Daily worship and care
The simple daily practice is to offer water (jal abhishek), with milk on Mondays or festivals, bel leaves and a lamp. After milk or panchamrit, rinse with plain water and wipe dry, because milk left on brass darkens it and smells. Clean the base channel with a soft brush. General cleaning is covered in how to clean a brass idol, and the full list for the festival is in the Mahashivratri puja list.
