About this piece

This brass jaldhara, the channel that carries water over the Shivling, is 11 inches high and weighs 1,700 grams. Made in Moradabad from pure brass and polished, it is used for Shiv abhishek during Mahashivratri and Shravan. Its spout is set to drain cleanly into a bowl.

After the puja, rinse the jaldhara with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth. Use lemon and salt for tarnish, never harsh chemicals. A fitting gift for a Shiv temple or a home mandir.

The craft

Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Care, shipping and returns

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
