Brass Diyas and Pantis (Deepak)
diya · deepak · panti · pital ka diya · niranjan · akhand diya
About these pieces
The plain diya for the daily lamp. Most are brass (167), with 14 in aluminium, 10 with wood, and 4 each in copper and iron. Heights run from 0.5 inch flat pantis to 7 inch table diyas, and weights from 20 g to about 420 g.
Pick by how long the lamp has to burn. A shallow panti is for a short aarti or for lining a rangoli and a staircase at Diwali, where you need many. A deeper cup, such as an akhand diya of about 3 inch, holds enough ghee or oil for a long puja. Table diyas with a stem or an Om back plate sit in front of the idol for the daily evening lamp. Heavier diyas stay put when you push the wick forward.
Brass diyas do not soak up oil or crack like clay, and the same set comes out every year after a wash.
