About this piece

This brass chowki, or bajot, stands 2.5 inches high and weighs 2,000 grams. Made in Moradabad from pure brass and polished, it is used as a low seat for a deity idol during puja. Its flat top and sturdy base keep the murti steady.

Wipe with a dry cloth after each puja and clean tarnish with lemon and salt. Place a clean cloth under the idol to protect the surface. It is a fitting piece for a home mandir or a gift for a family puja.

Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
