This brass lady oil lamp, or deep, is 10 inches high and weighs 1,760 grams. It is pure brass, polished and made in Moradabad, with a stone and colour-work finish on the figure. It holds a lamp for a puja or a festive corner.

Empty the oil and wipe with a dry cloth after use. Avoid harsh cleaners on the stone and colour work. It is a fitting gift for Diwali or a new home.

The craft

Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
