Brass Hand Bells for Pooja and Aarti (Hath Ki Ghanti)
hath ki ghanti · pooja ghanti · aarti bell · pital ki ghanti · bronze hand bell · mandir ghanti
About this collection
This page holds 39 hand bells from ₹200, from 3.2 to 8.5 inch tall. Thirty-one are pure brass, 5 are bronze and 3 are listed under wood. Weights run from 80 g to 1 kg and the costliest bell is ₹2,250.
A hand bell is chosen by grip and by sound. Height is mostly handle, so a taller bell is not always a louder one: a 6.2 inch bell here weighs 130 g and a 7.5 inch one weighs 560 g. The light bell gives a quick, bright ring that suits a flat and a short morning pooja. The heavy one has a thick cup, a deeper note and a ring that carries through the house, which is what you want for evening aarti with the family. If you ring through a long aarti, stay near 120 to 260 g so the wrist does not tire. Bronze bells are bought for their longer, clearer note. Handle designs differ too, and each listing shows the design number where there is more than one.
Ring a hand bell by rocking the wrist, not by shaking the arm, and the clapper strikes cleanly on both sides. Keep the inside of the cup dry. Oil and ghee from the aarti hand collect on the handle, so wipe it with a dry cloth after pooja.
