What Size Idol for a Home Temple? A Guide by Shelf and Room
How to choose idol size for a home mandir: 3 to 5 inch for a wall shelf, 6 to 10 inch for a pooja room, larger only with clear space. With a size table.
For a wall shelf or small mandir, choose a 3 to 5 inch idol. For a pooja room with a chowki, 6 to 10 inch. Go larger only if the idol will have about 6 inches of clear space around and above it, and only if you can still lift it out to bathe it.
A home idol is bathed, wiped and moved for cleaning. If it is too heavy or too tightly fitted to lift with ease, it is too big for the space.
The short rule and a size table
| Where it goes | Inside width of shelf or mandir | Idol height (guide) | Clear space to leave |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car dashboard | Any | Under 2.5 inch | Flat base, clear of the airbag panel |
| Small wall shelf mandir | 8 to 12 inch | 3 to 4 inch | 2 inches each side and above |
| Wall mandir or cabinet shelf | 12 to 18 inch | 4 to 6 inch | 2 to 3 inches each side and above |
| Floor or cabinet mandir | 18 to 24 inch | 6 to 8 inch | 3 to 4 inches each side and above |
| Pooja room with chowki | 24 to 36 inch | 8 to 10 inch | About 6 inches each side and above |
This table is a guide, not a standard. It assumes one main idol. A wide idol with a prabhavali (arch) or a group such as Ram Darbar needs the next row up.
How to measure your mandir: opening height, depth, shelf load
- Opening height. Measure from the shelf surface to the underside of the shelf or dome above. Subtract the clear space from the table. What remains is the tallest idol that fits, including its base and crown.
- Width. Measure the inside width, between pillars if the mandir has them. An idol is often half to two thirds as wide as it is tall.
- Depth. The idol’s base must sit fully on the shelf with an inch to spare behind, and with room in front for a diya.
- Shelf load. Add up the idols, the lamp and the thali. A wall shelf on two screws is not made for 5 kg of brass. Check the fixings.
Every listing on this site shows height in inches and weight. The median idol here weighs about 1 kg. Our mandirs for home run from 3 to 28 inch.
Wall shelf and small mandir: 3 to 5 inch
A 3 to 5 inch brass idol lifts in one hand and leaves room for a diya and a bell on the same shelf. The catalogue has 361 idols under 4 inch and 625 from 4 to 8 inch.
Pooja room with chowki: 6 to 10 inch
Once the idol sits on a chowki or a low platform at seated eye level, 6 to 10 inch reads well from across the room. Weight rises quickly here. A 6 inch brass idol is often around 1 kg, and a 10 inch one can be several times that, because weight grows much faster than height. Check the number on the listing, and check that the chowki is wider than the idol’s base.
Large idols: 12 inch and above, and the weight they bring
A 12 inch or taller idol needs a room, not a shelf. Plan for:
- A stone, concrete or solid wood platform. Not a glass shelf, not a wall bracket.
- About 6 inches of clear space on each side and above, so the idol is not jammed against the wall and can be cleaned behind.
- Two people to lift it.
- A low, stable base if there are children or pets at home. A tall, heavy idol on a narrow stand can tip and cause real injury.
Many families follow a custom of keeping home idols small, on the view that a large idol calls for fuller daily worship. The limit differs from family to family and there is no single rule. Follow your own tradition and your space.
More than one idol: keeping heights in proportion
Keep the main deity the tallest,. Idols meant as a pair, such as Lakshmi and Ganesh, should be the same height. Leave a gap between idols so each lifts out without knocking the next.
For which way they should face, see which direction idols face in a home mandir.
Desk and car sizes
For a desk, 2 to 4 inch with a flat, solid base. For a car, under 2.5 inch with a flat base that takes an adhesive pad. Keep it low on the dashboard, out of the driver’s line of sight and off the airbag panel.
