About this piece
This brass chowki, or bajot, is 19 inches high and weighs 10,200 grams. It is pure brass, polished and made in Moradabad, and used as a stool-style seat for a deity idol during puja. The flat top keeps the idol steady.
Wipe with a dry cloth after each puja and clean tarnish with lemon and salt. Place a cloth under the idol to protect the surface. It is a fitting piece for a temple or a large home mandir.
The craft
Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.
Sand cast, hand engraved, lacquer finished.

How it is made
Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.
