About this piece
This brass stand diya, or deepak, is 17.5 inches high and weighs 3,140 grams. It is pure brass, polished and made in Moradabad, and holds lamps for a temple aarti. The stem is finished evenly.
Wipe the stand with a dry cloth after each aarti and clean soot with lemon and salt. Keep the cups dry between uses. It is a fitting gift for a temple.
The craft
Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.

How it is made
Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.
