About this piece

This plain aluminium diya is 1 inch high and weighs 30 grams. It is polished and made in Moradabad, with a simple bowl that holds the oil and wick. It is an everyday lamp for the puja room.

Empty and dry the diya after each use. Wipe with a soft cloth and avoid scouring the surface. It suits a daily puja or a gift for a new home.

The craft

Moradabad. Cast, hammered and lacquered by hand, for three hundred years.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.
