About this piece

This brass cock oil lamp, or murga deepak, is pure brass and polished in Moradabad. The cock shape sits on a small stand for a puja corner, and the figure is finished with clean detail.

Empty the oil and wipe with a dry cloth after use. Clean tarnish with lemon and salt. It is a light gift for a puja corner.

How it is made

Brass is melted and poured into sand moulds, cooled, then turned on a lathe to true the shape. Engravers cut the pattern by hand with a hammer and chisel. The piece is polished on a buffing wheel and sealed with a clear lacquer so it stays bright without weekly cleaning.

Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from detergents and damp. Handmade pieces vary slightly in finish, that is the point.

How long does a brass diya burn?
A small diya holds about an hour of ghee or oil; deep cups of 100 ml burn six to eight hours with a thick cotton wick.
Which oil should I use?
