Can We Keep Laddu Gopal at Home? Daily Seva, Two Idols and Travel

Yes, Laddu Gopal can be kept at home. What daily seva involves, whether two idols are allowed, what to do when you travel, and which size to choose.

Yes, Laddu Gopal can be kept at home, and lakhs of families do. The difference from other idols is the custom of seva: Laddu Gopal is cared for as a child of the house, with a daily bath, food, dressing and rest. Before bringing one home, decide whether someone in the family can keep that up.

Seva practices vary between traditions and families. Treat this as a description of common custom and follow your own family or guru where they differ.

What daily seva usually involves

Time Seva
Morning Wake with a bell, bath (snan) with water or panchamrit, dry, dress and adorn (shringar)
After the bath Offer bhog: makhan mishri, fruit or what the family eats, with a tulsi leaf
Midday and evening Bhog again; evening aarti
Night Offer milk, then put to rest (shayan) on the bed or jhula

Families with less time keep a shorter routine: bath, bhog and aarti in the morning, bhog and rest at night. Regularity matters more than length.

Can we keep two Laddu Gopal at home?

It is not forbidden, and some homes have two because one was a gift. The usual advice is to keep one, because each idol is given full seva, and two means twice the care. If you have two, both are bathed, fed and put to rest; one is not left aside.

When you travel

By custom Laddu Gopal is not left alone in a locked house. Families either take him along in a small basket with his clothes and bhog, or leave him with a relative or neighbour who will continue the seva. This is one reason many choose a small idol.

Which size

Laddu Gopal sizes run from number 0 to number 6 and beyond. Sizes 0 to 3 suit most homes and are easy to carry; clothes and ornaments are sold by the same numbers. Our Laddu Gopal size chart gives the height of each number. A solid brass idol is the usual choice because it takes a daily bath without damage.

What you will need

  • A singhasan or small bed, and a jhula if you wish
  • Two or three sets of clothes (poshak) in the idol’s size number
  • Mukut, mala, flute
  • A small bhog plate and glass kept only for him
  • A soft towel for drying after the bath

Dry the idol fully after every bath. Water left in the folds darkens brass; see how to clean a brass idol.
