Nandi Idol at Home: Where to Place It and Which Way It Faces

Can you keep a Nandi idol at home, where it goes and which way it faces: in front of the Shivling, looking at it, and smaller than it. Placement, size and care.

Updated 14 Oct 2026 · 3 min read · Vedikcraft, Moradabad

Yes, a Nandi idol can be kept at home. By custom Nandi sits directly in front of the Shivling and faces it, as he does in every Shiva temple. If you have no Shivling, Nandi is placed in the pooja room facing the picture or idol of Shiva, or kept as a showpiece in the living room.

These placements are tradition. Families and regions differ, and no placement can promise a result. Follow your own family’s practice where it differs from this guide.

The customs people ask about

  • Nothing between Nandi and Shiva. In temples devotees do not stand in the line of sight between them. At home, keep that line clear of other idols.
  • Nandi is smaller than the Shivling. A Nandi about half the height of the Shivling looks right and follows temple proportion.
  • One Nandi per Shivling.
  • Not on the floor. Keep it on a shelf or chowki, off the ground.
  • Whispering a wish in Nandi’s ear is a temple custom. Some families follow it at home.

Which size

For a home mandir with a Shivling of 2 to 4 inches, a Nandi of 1 to 2 inches fits. A showpiece Nandi for a living room shelf is usually 4 to 8 inches. A solid brass Nandi of 3 inches weighs a few hundred grams, so it stays put when the shelf is dusted. Our guide on idol size for a home temple gives the general rule.

Care

Water and milk offered to the Shivling often splash on Nandi. Wipe and dry it after abhishek, because milk left on brass turns it dark. Cleaning is the same as for any brass idol: see how to clean a brass idol.
